'월요 채플'을 위해 집에서 일찍 나선 시각이 7시 10분 전, 채플 후 차를 마시니 한결 낫다. 쌀쌀한 날씨에 아내를 데리러 반림동으로 향했다. '오 마이!' 집에서 쉬고 있을 때, 스티븐의 전화를 받았다. 기다리던 전화였는데. 밀양으로 이동. 5시 8분 출발하는 KTX를 탈 수 있었던 것은 순전히 시경이 덕이다.

VIP 가 '싱가포르 일정'을 마치고 중국, 다음 순방지로 출발하자 B팀은 한국으로 다시 이동하게 된 것. 이른 아침 '콜' 했지만 나와 연결이 되지 않아 걱정했었다고. KTX 안에서 스티븐의 전화를 다시 받고, 도착 시각을 알려주면서, 숙소를 안 이상 내가 '하야트 호텔'로 가는 편이 더 용이할 것이라 설득, 만남의 장소를 변경했다.

1층 커피샵 '피아노 무대' 곁에서 우린 너무너무 반갑게 만났다. 어른스러워 보였다.

동생 '회영'(Young)이는 ''짐'(James S. Greer)과 서울 용산 'Memorial Church'에서 결혼식을 올리고(77년), 후암동 '홍수환'(복싱선수)네 2층 집에 혼인 살림을 차렸었다. 당시 장신대 학부에 편입해 공부하던 난, 홍만조 장황호 등 몇을 불러 식장 안내를 맡겼던 기억이 난다. 그 후 스티븐이 태어났고, 친구 지정선과 동생 회주(Ju)의 돌봄과 또 우리 부모님의 지극한 사랑을 많이 받고 자랐다.

다시 캐트린이 태어났고, 둘은 귀엽고 튼튼하게 잘 자랐다. 특히 스티븐은 활동성이 강한 개구장이였고, 캐트린은 어디서나 사랑과 귀염을 독차지하였다. 그후 여러번 Young과 Jim 은 약속대로 3~4 년 주기로 한국을 방문해 가족들과 재회의 기쁨을 나누었고 언젠가 스티븐(10살)과 캐트린을 한국에 데리고 나왔던 적이 있었다.

안동에서 사역하던 어느 해 여름이었는데 근 1주간?정도를 우리 가족과 함께 전원생활을 즐겼었다. 그때 시경이(씨씨)와 은석(밀, 미라)이와도 사귐이 있었다. 같이 하회마을을 탐방하였고, 강가에서 물놀이 하는 아이들을 지켜보면서 즐거운 한 때를 보내기도. 별이 많은 어느 날 밤, 평상에 걸터앉아 가볍게 흔들리는 나무 그림자들을 보면서나도 모르게 'Joyce Kilmer' 의 詩, 'Trees'(나무들) 를 읊고 있었다.

Jim 이 운을 맞춰 함께 읊어 주었는데, 실은 학창시절 교과서를 통해 그 시를 배웠다 했다. 지금 그의 아들, 스티븐이 내 앞에 있다. 자신의 고향, 한국 서울에 온 것이다. 아, 그 때가 언제인가? 하마 15년 도 훨씬 지났으니.

로비에서 정보를 얻은 후, 저녁을 먹기 위해 이태원 해밀턴 호텔로 택시를 요청했다. 호텔 뒷편에 역시나, 그 유명한 갈비집이 눈에 들어오고, 우린 2층으로 올라갔다. 너무 오랫만에 이태원 풍경이라 어리둥절했는데, 나 말고는 모두 외국인? 아님 모두 미국인들 같다. 한국에 이런 곳도 다 있구나 싶다.

스티븐 역시 갈비를 제일 좋아했다. 그 아빠에 그 아들이다. 그러나 우린 어메리컨 커스텀과 코리언 커스텀의 충돌로 인해 잠시 실갱이를 했다. 당연히 어른이 밥값을 치르어야 한다 하고, 스티븐은 당연히 자신의 몫이라 우기면서. 일단 호텔로 돌아와 직원의 도움으로 KTX의 시각표를 확인하고 10 시 막차를 잡기로 했다. Fiancee 에게 전화를 하러 간 사이 찬찬히 계획을 다시 확인해 보았다.

우린 막차를 타고 부산을 향했고, 무려 3시간 이상 거침없는 대화를 쏟아내었고, 새벽 1 시에 부산역을 나왔지만 총알택시는 순식간에 우리를 해운대에 실어다 준다. Ju 네 집에서 놀라움과 기쁨의 재회를 보고, 그리고 곧장 휴식에 들어갔다. 샤워 중에 '오바마 전화'라 소리치는 바람에 받고 보니, 미국의 동생이다. 역시 즐거운 비명 소리에 가깝다.

1. 인천에서 출발한 당일 오후 7시에 애틀랜타에 내려, '영'이네 부부와 9시에 Doraville 한인식당, 초원뷔페에서 저녁을 같이 하고 약 15분 거리에 있는 ' Condo' 로 돌아와 선물을 나누고 그 밤을 쉬었다. 다음 날, 편안한 마음으로 출발해 엔터프라이즈로 거의 4시간 만에 집에 들어올 수 있었다. '조지아주'와 '앨러버마주' 경계지점 정도에서 대형 'Kia' 자동차 공장을 보고 반갑기도 하고 많이 놀랐다. 동생 이야기로는 현대와 기아차가 최근 들어서 인지도와 인기가 많이 좋아졌다고 자랑한다.

2. 6월 한 달을 꼬박 같이 지낸 동생 Young 의 집이다. 며칠 같이 지내면서 'Airpark' 라고 새 이름을 지어 주었다.

주택은 여느 집과 잘 어울리는 '프런트 도어' 쪽으로 큰 키 호도나무와 자두나무, 목련과 베롱나무가 열지어 있고, '백 도어' 쪽은 사람이 출입하기 용이하게 나무바닥의 운치있는 포치가 있다. 앞 위로 탁 트인 넓은 마당은 잔디가 입혀져 있었는데. 이틀 간격으로 스프링 쿨러가 아침 일찍 자동으로 물을 뿌리고...주 일회 정기적으로 잔디를 손질하는 사람들이 와서 주인과 협의, 잔디깎기, 약치기, 나무치기, 정글치기 등....

3. 아래채는 거실과 왼쪽, 손님방(욕실이 달린 침실) 그리고 거실 오른 쪽으로 너른 주방과 응접실이 연이어 있고 그 사이에 이층으로 올라가는 계단이 있다. 이층엔 주인 부부의 침실이 하나, 둘, 셋 그리고 거실과 서재, 두개의 욕실과 옷방이 서넛? 암튼 크고 넓고....공간들이 용도에 따라 다양했다.

4. 거의 한 주간을 지내면서, Family Park 를 다니면서 아침 운동을 다녔고, 우체국, 소방서, 'Piggly Wiggly' 대형 마트, 'Welcome Center' 등 차를 타고 다니면서 동네 주변 지리를 조금씩 익혔다.

'햄튼'은 참으로 인내심이 강한 강아지다. 평상시 아침 출근 전에 '피와 풍'을 하고 나면 동생이 퇴근할 때까지 참는다고 하니 이게 훈련인지...이해가 안 된다. 혹시 내장에 탈이라도 나는 것은 아닌가? 헌데 보스턴에서 캐트린이 데려온 이후 3년 동안 단 한 번도 건강에 이상징후를 보인 적이 없다고 하니...거 참 신기하기만 하다.

5. 며칠 후 가볍게 짐을 꾸리고 'Orlando 여행일정'을 위해 함께 출발했다. 'Enterprise' 에서 남서쪽으로 방향을 잡고 달리면서, Tallahassee 를 지나서, Gainesville 을 지나 저녁나답에 Orlando 에 도착 여장을 풀었다.

'Doubletree Guest Suites', 디즈니 리조트 경내 호텔이라 여러가지 잇점이 많았다. 일일 숙박이 $399 이라니? 그래도 짐은 조금도 염려하지 말란다. 사업상 자주 이용하고 있는 'Hilton' 과 자매라서 이곳을 이용하는 것이 자기로선 당연하다는 듯이 말한다. 아침 저녁으로 식사할 수 있는 좋은 식당과 디즈니 경내를 편하게 이용할 수 있도록 셔틀버스가 발빠르게 코스별로 운행하고 있다. 볼거리는 많고 시간은 짧은 '디즈니 여행객'들에겐 시간을 절약, 활용할 수 있어 엄청 고맙게 생각 된다.

Huey Helicopter

걸어서 약 20 분 거리에 아침 운동을 다닌 'Johnny Handerson Park' 가 있다. 공원 입구에 'Our Wall of Freedom' 과 'Huey Helicopter' 이라는 두 개의 Memorial 이 있다. 'Huey Helicopter' 는 월남전에서 맹활약을 보인 헬기로, 백마사단에도 지휘관전용 헬기가 'UH-1H' 이었는데 바로 이 종이다.

김영선 사단장이 움직일 때마다 혹은 전병규 장군이나 그 후에 조주태 장군(작전부)이 연대순시를 갈 때마다 비서실을 통해 대기시켜 늘 포사령관과 같이 탑승했던 것을 기억한다. 우리는 흔히 'CG기' 라고 불렀었다.

바로 그 헬기가 지금 당장이라도 작전지역으로 날아갈 것 같은 높은 자세로 공원 앞에 세워져 있다. 그리고 주위는 원형으로 붉은 장미정원이 아담하게 조성되어 있고, 헬기의 군사행동으로 인해 사망한 조종사들(지역) 이름이 가즈런히 장미를 따라 바닥에 새겨져 있다. 그들이 흘린 희생이라도 상징하듯, 아주 붉은 장미가.

그런대 바닥에 이름 없는 '빈 이름판'이 여러 개 더 많이 만들어져 있는 것이 이상했다. 앞으로 희생 할 수도 있을 그들을 염두에 두고 미리 만들어 놓은 것이다. 난 아직 미국을 잘 알지 못한다.

'Our Wall of Freedom' 은 1,2차 세계대전, 한국과 베트남 전, 사막의 폭풍(걸프전)과 이라크전에서 희생한 전사자들의 이름들이 새겨있다. 물론 그 지역출신들이다. 그런데 그 세개의 벽 중 두 개의 벽은 이미 거의 채워져 있지만, 남은 하나의 벽은 이렇게 빈 벽으로 남아 있다.

여기 작은 마을, 엔터프라이즈에서 마주친 '빈 이름판'과 '빈 벽'은 누군가 더 큰 부름에 복종함으로 채워질 '희생자'들의 몫이기에 그냥 스칠 수 없었다. 자국민, 혹은 가 본 적도 만난 적도 없는 타국민의 생명과 자유를 수호하기 위한 조국의 명령 앞에 서슴없이 달려갈 그들에게 머리 숙여 '미래의 경의'를 표한다.

* 아침 운동을 마치고 잔디에 앉아 휴식하고 있는 아내, 그 뒤로 'Huey Helicopter".

* 이른 아침인데도 그들을 기억, 추모하는 이들이 있어 가슴이 뭉클했다.

“Three weeks ago I was given a politically-charged question with a hidden personal agenda. I answered my question honestly and sincerely from my heart.
I was very careful to articulate in saying that I did not want to offend anybody, and that this is how I was raised and that this is what I believe a marriage should be; between one　 man and one　 woman. I was given a question, asking for my opinion and I stated my honest belief. Not onl　y do I hold this belief, but as Mr. Trump said, the President of the United States, the Secretary of State and many Americans agree with me in this belief. Immediately after the pageant, Judge #8 [Perez Hilton] began a cultural firestorm in the media. It went national as he was trying to be self-promoting and hateful.

“While I have remained silent since, I am honored to be here today to finally let my voice be heard and address the hateful attacks, despicable rumors and false allegations I have had [leveled at me] within the last three weeks. To be standing here today on behalf of the great state of California and the greatest country in the world, is by the grace of God. Being in the middle of a media firestorm is not something that I had planned or signed up for. But the days since have taught me to stand up for what you believe in, regardless of the consequences, personal attacks or disagreements.

“I am a strong woman. And because of that I am able to move forward and be the best Miss California, USA, that I can be. I am excited to fulfill my duties and continue serving the great state of California. Let me be clear: I am not an activist or anything, nor do I have a personal agenda. I was thrown into this firestorm from the time I was first asked the question ons　tage. I have become an advocate for the importance of not redefining marriage, based upon my own upbringing and beliefs. While I am not the most vocal proponent of traditional marriage, it appears from my singular response, I am the most visible. I am proud to be an American. I am proud of the freedoms we enjoy because of the brave men and women serving this great country and who have served. My grandfather served under General Patton during WWII and is someone I admire greatly. He never spoke about the Battle of the Bulge that he participated in as a rifleman, or the honorary medals he earned because of his bravery. But he did speak about the freedoms he fought for and he taught me to never back down and to never let anyone take those freedoms away from you. On April 19th, on that stage, I exercised my freedom of speech. And I was punished for doing so. This should not happen in America. It undermines the Constitutional rights for which my grandfather fought for.”

Time and Quiet

Jinhae Cherry Festival

To read about the life of Jesus is to read of a life filled with activity. His public
ministry began with His baptism. Then 40 days of solitude in the wilderness
immediately followed. After that, His was a full schedule.

Two interesting observations can be made about the pace of Jesus' ministry.
One　is that He never hurried anywhere. Jesus was never in a rush. His purpose
was so clear that other things were not allowed to put him in a rush.

The other is that He consistently found the time and the quiet to pray.
A healthy prayer life needs those two things: time and quiet.

How can you have a healthy prayer life without taking time to pray? You can't. Some
praying we do "on the run." It may be that we pray while driving or while working arou
nd the house. Still, we need quality prayer time, undistracted by any other activities.

The other need is for quiet. Finding a time and place where you are undistracted is
vital to a healthy prayer life. For some, those times and places are easy to find.
For others, it is a challenge.

Jesus set the example. He took time and found a quiet place to pray. Will you?
